Industrial Inkjet Printing

High-speed industrial inkjet printing on rolls and sheets, full colour with variable data support for labels, decals, and signage.

What is Industrial Inkjet Printing?

Industrial inkjet printing represents a significant advancement in the field of digital printing technologies, offering unparalleled precision and speed for high-volume production. This method utilises advanced ink formulations and sophisticated printhead designs to achieve exceptional image quality on a variety of substrates. As industries increasingly adopt this technology, it facilitates greater flexibility in design and reduces waste, thereby enhancing overall efficiency. The continual evolution of industrial inkjet systems is poised to transform manufacturing processes across multiple sectors. Digital inkjet printing uses high-resolution print heads to jet ink directly onto roll-fed or sheet-fed substrates at high speed, making it the most productive method for large-volume label and decal production. At Million, we operate systems using both solvent and UV-curable ink sets, giving us the flexibility to produce indoor graphics with the economics of solvent inks and outdoor-durable, instantly dry prints with UV-curable formulations, on the same equipment, without process changeovers.

White ink is standard on our systems, enabling full-colour printing on clear, metallic, and dark substrates without a separate preprinting step. Variable data capability is built into the workflow. Every label in a run can carry a unique serial number, barcode, QR code, or text field driven from a database or spreadsheet, with no speed penalty and no additional setup cost per variant.

In-line finishing options including lamination, die-cutting, and sheeting are available, allowing us to deliver fully finished labels on rolls or cut sheets ready for direct application. Whether your requirement is 500 labels or 500,000, digital inkjet production gives consistent colour, sharp detail, and a workflow that accommodates last-minute data changes or artwork revisions without affecting the production schedule.

Best for High-volume label and decal production that still needs per-unit variable data: large label runs for asset identification, product labelling and decals, where every label can carry a unique serial number, barcode, QR code or text field driven from a database with no speed penalty. High-resolution print heads jet ink directly onto roll-fed or sheet-fed substrates at high speed, white ink allows full-colour printing on clear, metallic and dark stocks, and both solvent and UV-curable inks are available for indoor economics or outdoor-durable, instantly dry prints. In-line lamination, die-cutting and sheeting can deliver fully finished labels on rolls or cut sheets ready to apply.

When it's cost-effective It is the most productive digital method for large volumes, so it is most economical where the run is long enough to reward its speed, while still avoiding the plates and screens that a traditional long-run process would need. Variable data and last-minute artwork changes add no setup cost per variant, so mixed and serialised runs stay efficient. For very short runs a wide-format or standard digital label press may be simpler, and for the longest runs of a single fixed design screen printing can still win on ink-film durability and unit cost. We will advise on the crossover for your quantity.

Commonly used materials in industrial inkjet printing are Vinyl, Polyester, Polypropylene, Rigid PVC, Aluminium Composite and Polycarbonate.

Frequently asked questions

Industrial inkjet printing applies variable data, serial numbers, dates, barcodes, batch codes, directly onto products or packaging at high speed. It is used for date coding, product identification, traceability marking, and compliance labelling in manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and logistics operations.

Industrial inkjet systems can mark on most substrates including metals, plastics, glass, cardboard, and coated surfaces. Ink formulation is selected based on the substrate: solvent-based inks for non-porous surfaces, water-based inks for porous materials, and specialised inks for metal or heat-resistant applications.

Inkjet printing is faster and more cost-effective for high-volume variable data marking but produces a surface-applied mark that may be less durable than laser marking. Laser marking is preferred where permanence and resistance to cleaning chemicals are critical; inkjet is preferred for high-speed production line marking.

Yes. Industrial inkjet systems can produce 1D barcodes and 2D QR codes meeting GS1 and ISO barcode standards. Print resolution and contrast must be verified for reliable scanning. We advise on the appropriate system and ink combination for your scanning environment.

Yes. In-line finishing options including lamination, die-cutting, and sheeting mean labels can be delivered fully finished and ready for direct application. Lamination adds surface protection for handling, chemical contact, or outdoor exposure, and labels can be supplied on rolls or as cut sheets.
