Foam Shadow Boards & Tool Inserts
Foam Shadow Boards & Tool Inserts
Shadow foam cut to the outline of every tool, supplied as a drawer or case insert or as a wall-mounted
- Drawer, toolbox, roller cabinet and hard case inserts, cut to the profile of each tool so every item has one place and one place only
- Wall-mounted foam shadow board panels in the same EVA foam, sized for the wall space or the cabinet door instead of dropped into a drawer
- Two-colour EVA foam, so a contrasting base layer shows through the moment a tool is lifted out
- Laser cut, CNC routed or waterjet cut in-house, depending on the foam, the detail in the profile and the size of the run
Product Description
A shadow board gives every tool one outlined place, so a gap is all anyone has to look for. Shadow foam does that with a cut pocket instead of a printed outline: the foam is profiled to each tool, the tool drops in, and the space it leaves is a hole the shape of the missing item. Million cuts that foam to your tools, as an insert for a drawer, toolbox or case, or as a panel fixed to a wall.
Million supplies the foam: the cut panel, profiled to your tools, in the size you need. We do not manufacture the rigid metal or timber wall panels that hold tools on brackets and clips, and we do not supply the brackets, clips or fixings. Those are a stocked hardware item sold in Singapore by tool storage suppliers. If you have the panel, cabinet or drawer already, the foam that goes on or into it is our work.
The contrast comes from building the insert in two layers: a cut top layer in one colour over a base layer in another, so the moment a tool is lifted out the base shows through and the gap reads from across the bay. With one colour you are looking for an absence; with two, for a block of colour that should not be there. It is a faster check, and easier to hand to someone who does not know the tools.
Drawer and toolbox inserts are the usual starting point. The insert is cut to the internal dimensions of the drawer or case so it sits flat and does not shift, and each tool has its own pocket with a finger relief cut in so it lifts out without tipping the tray. Spanner sets, sockets, torque wrenches, gauges and instruments are profiled the same way, and hard case inserts for transit and site cases follow the same principle.
The wall-mounted version uses the same foam. Instead of dropping into a drawer, the cut panel is sized for the wall space or cabinet door it has to fit, and the tools sit in the pockets in the layout you specify. Tools used together are grouped together, and the panel is set out to working height and reach. This is what most people mean by a foam shadow board: shadow board foam cut to your tools.
Most of this work is bought as part of a 5S or lean programme, where the point is that anyone walking past can see whether the set is complete without opening or counting anything. A 5S shadow board in foam gives that check in one look. Where foreign object damage matters, in aerospace, marine and precision work, the same insert doubles as the tool control record: a tool is either in its pocket or it is unaccounted for.
The material is EVA foam, in a single colour or in two colours with a contrasting base layer. Cutting is done in-house by laser, by CNC router or by waterjet, and which one is used depends on the foam, the detail in the profile and the size of the run. Foam insert fabrication is a standing service here.
There are three ways to start. Bring the tools in and we will profile them directly, the most accurate route and the one for mixed or irregular sets. Send a drawing and we cut to it, working from .dwg, .pdf, .eps, .cdr or .ai files. Or send a photograph with the tools laid out flat and the sizes marked. Either way we also need the internal dimensions of the drawer, toolbox or case, or the panel size for a wall-mounted foam tool insert. Contact us with your tool list and dimensions.
Cut in the same workshop as our custom stencils, and often ordered with asset and equipment tags so each tool in the board carries its own number.

Frequently Asked Questions
A shadow board in the general sense is a panel with a printed or painted outline for each tool, and the tool is held on the panel by a bracket or a clip. A foam shadow board replaces the outline and the bracket with a cut pocket: the foam is profiled to the tool, the tool sits down inside it, and the gap left behind is the shape of the item that is missing. Nothing can be put back in the wrong place, because it will not fit. Million makes the foam version, in both the wall-mounted panel form and the drawer, toolbox or case insert form.
Only the foam. We cut the foam panel to your tools and to the space it has to fit, and it is mounted on your side. The rigid metal or timber panels with brackets and clips are a stocked hardware item and are sold in Singapore by tool storage suppliers. Plenty of customers buy the panel or the cabinet there and come to us for the foam that goes on it, and that split works well: the panel is a catalogue purchase, while the foam is the part that has to match your particular tools.
Yes. Every insert is cut to the internal dimensions you give us and to the tools that have to go into it, so there is no standard size and no fixed layout. Send the internal length, width and depth of the drawer, toolbox or case, and either the tools themselves, a drawing, or a photograph of the tools laid out flat with the sizes marked. Roller cabinet drawers, bench drawers, hard transit cases, site cases and service vehicle trays are all cut the same way.
EVA foam. The two-colour build is a cut top layer over a base layer in a contrasting colour, and it is what makes a missing tool obvious rather than merely findable. With one colour you are looking into an empty pocket and have to know what should be in it. With two, the base colour shows through the gap and a supervisor walking past sees it without stopping. Single-colour shadow foam is available where that contrast is not needed.
Three things. First, the tools, as physical items, a drawing, or a photograph with them laid out flat and the overall sizes marked. Second, the dimensions of the space the foam has to fit: the internal size of the drawer, toolbox or case, or the wall or cabinet door area for a mounted panel. Third, the quantity, because a one-off and a repeat set for twenty benches are planned differently. We accept .dwg, .pdf, .eps, .cdr and .ai artwork, and our in-house graphic designers can work the layout up from a marked-up photograph.
